The Introduction Of Bastille

Bastille was an fortress and prison in Paris, begun c.1369, now demolished. The Bastille became a hated symbol of absolutism because it was used for arbitrary and secret imprisonment by the crown. On July 14, 1789, a Parisian mob stormed the prison, hoping to seize its store of ammunition, but found only seven prisoners. This marked the start of lower-class participation in the FRENCH REVOLUTION. July 14-Bastille Day-became a national holiday in France.
